The outside of a Kerala home takes more punishment than any room inside: heavy monsoon rain, strong sun, algae, and the weight of a parked car. An indoor tile placed outside will usually fade, crack or turn slippery within a few seasons. Here is how to choose tiles for your sit-out, car porch, steps and terrace so they last.
What outdoor tiles must handle
- Rain and moisture: low water absorption so the tile does not soak water and grow moss.
- Heat: surfaces that do not become too hot to walk on at noon.
- Grip: a textured surface that is safe when wet.
- Load: strength for foot traffic, and more for vehicles.
- Colour: fade resistance under strong sunlight.
Pick a dense, low-absorption tile
Porcelain and good vitrified tiles absorb very little water, which is why they are the usual choice outdoors. Porcelain is generally defined as absorbing 0.5 percent water or less. Ask for the water-absorption figure on the data sheet. For a comparison of tile types, read our guide to vitrified vs ceramic vs porcelain tiles.
Choose lighter colours for sunny areas
Dark and glossy tiles absorb heat and can become uncomfortable underfoot in the afternoon. Light and mid-tone matte tiles stay cooler and hide dust and water marks better. Wood-look and stone-look porcelain gives you the natural look without the maintenance of real timber or stone.
Plan the slope and drainage
Water must run away from the house and toward a drain. A gentle slope, commonly about 1 in 100, is a typical target, and your contractor can confirm the right figure for your site. Standing water leads to algae, stains and slippery patches.
Laying tips that prevent cracks and loose tiles
- Waterproof terraces and balconies before tiling.
- Use a polymer-modified tile adhesive suited to outdoor use instead of plain cement paste.
- Leave slightly wider joints outdoors so tiles can expand in heat.
- Add movement joints at regular intervals on large areas and use flexible sealant in them.
- Wait for the full curing time before walking or driving on the surface.
Keep outdoor tiles looking new
Sweep regularly, wash with a soft brush and mild cleaner before algae builds up after the monsoon, and avoid harsh acids on grout. Our large format guide also covers how bigger tiles reduce grout lines, which means fewer places for moss to grow.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my indoor floor tile on the sit-out? Only if the data sheet shows low water absorption and a grip rating suitable for wet areas. Otherwise choose a dedicated outdoor tile.
Which tile finish is best for a Kerala car porch? A matte, textured, heavy-duty tile on a strong base. Ask the showroom which ranges are meant for vehicle use.
How do I stop algae on outdoor tiles? Keep the surface sloped and drained, clean it often, and choose textured, low-absorption tiles.
