The simple habits that protect a tile investment long after installation day
Why Grout Fails Before Tiles Do
In most homes, the tile itself easily outlasts the grout between it. Grout is porous, and without regular care it absorbs dirt, oil, and moisture, gradually darkening and eventually cracking. This is why a floor that’s only a few years old can start looking tired even though the tiles underneath are in perfect condition — the grout lines are usually the real culprit.
Daily and Weekly Habits That Matter
A simple sweep followed by a damp mop is enough for most days — the goal is just to keep grit from being ground into the surface underfoot, since grit is what causes most of the fine scratching on tile finishes over time. Harsh acidic cleaners should be avoided on both tile and grout, especially on natural stone or polished finishes, as they can dull the surface permanently.
Dealing With Stains and Discolouration
For grout that’s already discoloured, a baking-soda paste or a dedicated grout cleaner with a stiff brush usually restores most of the original colour without needing to re-grout. Sealing grout lines once a year — a quick job with a small brush-on sealant — makes future cleaning considerably easier by keeping moisture and stains from soaking in as deeply.
When to Call in a Professional
If grout has started crumbling, or if tiles sound hollow when tapped, that’s usually a sign of a deeper installation issue rather than something surface cleaning can fix, and it’s worth getting looked at before it spreads. Otherwise, a bit of routine care — rather than a major clean-up every year or two — is what actually keeps a tiled floor looking close to new for a decade or more.
