Tile Price Is Only Part of the Bill
It’s easy to compare tiles purely by their per-square-foot price, but the tile itself is usually only part of the total cost. Adhesive, grout, labour, wastage, and any surface preparation — like breaking and removing old flooring — all add up, and skipping this math early is one of the most common reasons renovation budgets run over.
Why Tile Format Affects Labour Cost
Larger format tiles and slabs generally cost more to lay per square foot than standard-size tiles, since they require a perfectly flat subfloor and more skilled handling to avoid cracking during installation. Intricate patterns, herringbone layouts, and tiles that need mitred edges for a seamless corner finish also take longer to install, and labour is typically charged by time and complexity, not just area.
Wastage Is Not Optional
Most contractors budget for 5–10% wastage on a standard room, and more for diagonal layouts or rooms with a lot of cuts around fixtures. Buying exactly the calculated area and no more is one of the most common budgeting mistakes, since it almost always leads to a mismatched batch being needed later if even a few extra pieces are required.
Where It’s Worth Spending More
For areas that see constant use — kitchen floors, main living areas, and entryways — spending a bit more on a durable, full-body or well-rated tile tends to pay for itself by avoiding an early re-tile. For lower-traffic spaces like guest rooms, a mid-range tile with a good finish is usually a reasonable place to save, without any real difference in how the finished space looks or feels day to day.
